Tappan Vineyard Yearly Update

The Chateau Schoppel vineyard continues to grow, albeit very slowly. After last year's debacle when a deer ate most of the leaves of my two grape vines, the plants recovered, and leafed out nicely this past spring. The problem arose this summer when I decided not to water them. I saw this great movie called Bottle Shock, in which a California vintner won a French tasting contest back in the 70's. The owner in that movie said that vines should not be pampered- that they needed stress to grow grapes with great taste. Unfortunately, I guess I stressed them too much, since half the leaves turned yellow and died as a result of lack of water. The good news is that the vines are recovering as a result of watering- and the deer has not returned. Yet.
