AUTUMN BRINGS BRILLIANT COLOR SPECTACULAR SHOW TO NYACK
We should be about a week away from the peak of fall colors in the Hudson Valley. The spectacular red, yellow, purple, and orange leaves will display in all their glory before turning brown and falling back to the earth in the endless circle of life. As the nights grow longer leaves form an abscission layer to block the transportation of chlorophyll and nutrients between the tree and the leaf. As the green chlorophyll dries up the natural yellow and orange pigments shine through. Red and purple pigments are manufactured from sugar that gets trapped in the leaf. Many factors play a role in how vivid the change is. A wet growing season with a crisp cool autumn seems to produce the best leaf show. A prolonged drought like we had this year causes the abscission layer to form early and many leaves drop while still green. An early frost will put a stop to the show by destroying the trees ability to produce red and purple pigments. Enjoy nature’s beauty while it lasts.
